Journey Home is a new soundtrack release from renowned pianist Andrea Keller, composed by the musician in response to an exquisite film by Hayley Miro Browne.
This creative screen and sound collaboration is a tribute to each artists’ fathers, now deceased, combining music and film in mutual accompaniment. Andrea Keller’s music and Hayley Miro Browne’s visuals bring together images of Australia and the Czech Republic during the 1970s and ‘80s, captured through the lens of the pianist’s late father, Erik Keller.
Following a discovery of over 3000 photographic slides in storage almost two decades after her father’s passing, Keller – who was estranged from her father for her teenage years through to her mid-20s – went on an archival journey sorting through the many images of memorable family adventures of the 1970s and ‘80s.
Keller and Browne began their collaboration centred on the topics of childhood, family and home with the result a side-by-side interpretation with music and film creating the connection to both artist’s deceased fathers. Through this connection, Journey Home grapples with the themes of displacement and distance in extraordinary circumstances.
Andrea Keller’s compositions in Journey Home are the result of extensive explorations into the process and technique of contemporary Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, from which Keller has drawn concepts from archival sketchbooks.
Hayley Miro Browne’s visuals combine the technique of filming slide photography and adding moving imagery. With visual storytelling drawing from her childhood memories with her late father, respected jazz musician Allan Browne, Hayley’s imagery connects with Keller’s thoughtful and reflective compositions.
Allan Browne was a mentor to many Australian musicians, including Andrea Keller who played in his trios from 2000 until his passing in 2015, recording two albums together.
Journey Home captures both Keller and Browne’s reflections on and connections to their fathers, in a visual and musical tribute that delves into the importance of family, establishing memories and reliving your historical past.
Journey Home features music composed and performed by pianist Andrea Keller, moving image and visuals by Hayley Miro Browne, original photographs by Erik Keller and Hayley Miro Browne.
The compositions and improvisations presented in Journey Home were recorded over two days in early 2020, and in two locations in Victoria, Australia: Tempo Rubato, Brunswick and Beleura, Mornington. These two iconic venues were selected because they house three exquisite Australian made Stuart & Sons pianos, each with a distinctive timbre, touch, size, and range (from 102 – 108 keys). Each of the three stunning pianos feature on the Journey Home release.
